Prof Gericke is a Neurologist, Epileptologist, and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Australian National University. He serves as Squadron Leader and Aerospace Neurologist in the RAAF and as Convener of the Australian Government Specialist Medical Review Council (SMRC).

He previously worked as an academic neurologist at Calvary Mater Newcastle, the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane, King’s College Hospital London, and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

He studied medicine at the Free University of Berlin and Tufts and Harvard Medical Schools. He completed his specialist training in neurology at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin and the University Hospitals of Strasbourg and Geneva. This included fellowships in adult and paediatric epileptology and pre-surgical epilepsy evaluation, including intracranial EEG recording.

He holds master’s degrees from the University of Cambridge, the University of London, and Deakin University, and two research doctorates: an MD (magna cum laude) in Cognitive Neurology from the Free University of Berlin and a PhD in Health Systems Research from Berlin University of Technology.

He chairs the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists (ANZAN) Therapeutics Committee and the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Neuroepidemiology Section and serves on the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE) Standards and Best Practice Council. He also leads the specialist neurology training for physicians from the Pacific Islands at Fiji National University.

His special interests include:

  • Epilepsy, including first seizures, complex epilepsy, transition from paediatrics to adult care, epilepsy in pregnancy

  • Aerospace Neurology for civilian and military pilots

  • Medico-legal Expert in Neurology

Epilepsy

Prof Gericke is one of Australia’s leading epileptologists. He accepts referrals for first seizures, complex and difficult to treat epilepsy, transition from paediatric to adult care, epilepsy in pregnancy, and epilepsy in patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He also assesses patients with non-epileptic attacks.

Aerospace Neurology

Prof Gericke serves as Squadron Leader and Aerospace Neurologist in the Royal Australian Air Force. For civilian pilots, he acts as DAME and as CASA-approved Aviation Consultant in Neurology. He teaches and conducts research in military and aviation neurology. Prof Gericke accepts referrals from the ADF, CASA, Airlines, insurance companies and pilots’ treating doctors.

Medico-legal Expert

Prof Gericke supports defendant and plaintiff claims relating to neurological disorders in all Australian jurisdictions. His unique expertise, combining clinical neurology and public health medicine, allows him to go beyond standard neurological expert advice, particularly concerning causality in clinical negligence, life expectancy prognostication, and regulatory standard claims.
